Syllabus for Year 1
During the First Year in Translation Studies you will be introduced to the principles of translation and translation studies and gradually gain insights in terminology and translation technology. Special consideration is given to the practice of translation while you will work with and analyze authentic texts. Your translations will be discussed and corrected in class with the participation of both the other students and the instructor. By the end of the first year, you will have acquired an understanding of the process of translation as an intellectual as well as a professional activity.
The following are covered during the First Year in Translation Studies:
- General Translation (English-Greek)
- Analysis of the source-language text
- Identification of translation difficulties
- Development of translation strategies and methodologies
- Terminology and Terminology management
- Introduction to Translation Theory
- Familiarization with translation technology
Syllabus for Year 2
During the second year, you are guided to handle the demands of professional translation and learn how to act independently while being part of a translation team. You enjoy high-quality specialized translator training while emphasis is given to translations from English into Greek and Greek into English.
You learn to work both individually and as a group to produce high-quality professional translations that meet industry standards. You are also taught methods of analyzing the source-language text and techniques, which will help you deal with the translation difficulties arising from factors such as the readership, the publication and the deadline for delivering your translation.
During the course you are required to translate authentic texts of specialized content from various areas such as:
- Social Science and Humanities
During the second year of your studies, Translation Technology will be a key component of your training as you will learn how to use Computer-Assisted Translation Tools such as SDL Trados Technologies.
Your final grade is determined from the grades you have received during your participation in the first-year course in:
- Three written tests
- Class participation
- Delivery of a translation assignment at a professional level
Opportunity to further your studies
Upon successful completion of the second year of the program, you are qualified to join the professional translation community. If you wish to continue your studies, you may attend a preparatory course for the Institute of Linguists examination for the internationally recognized Diploma in Translation. Also, eligible candidates can also continue their studies at an MA Level and participate in the Master of Arts in Translation offered by Hellenic American College in cooperation with Hellenic American University
