"Urbanism of Negotiation, Part 2", an exhibition of architectural projects by Study Abroad students from the University of Western Australia (Jan. 17 - Feb. 3, 2018)
An exhibition of architectural projects by students of the University of Western Australia (UWA), who have participated in the “Athens Studio” Study Abroad program will take place from January 17 to February 3, 2018 at Hellenic American Union Galleries.
The exhibition features projects produced for the UWA architectural studios that were held in Athens from 1995 to 2017 and coordinated by Professors Kalliope Kontozolgou and Nigel Westbrook.
From pre-Olympic Athens to Athens in crisis and eventually future Athens, the students who took part in these design workshops envisioned transformations of the city. These workshops aimed to go beyond the usual picturesque or touristic consumption of the exotic, and instead instill a confrontation with the multilayered and complex city in a state not just of crisis, but also of rapid change. Thus, the topic of Studio 2017 was “Neapolis: Nea Polis” and was organized as part of the Hellenic American Union’s initiative for the preservation of the historic Athenian district. In the projects displayed in this exhibition, the students envision the future Neapolis in its public spaces, forgotten corners, decaying buildings and hidden gardens.
The exhibition is organized by Hellenic American College in cooperation with Hellenic American Union and the School of Design of the University of Western Australia (UWA).
